Happy Father’s Day, all!

Sadly my own Dad isn’t with us any longer… but we spent the afternoon doing something he’d have approved of wholeheartedly. Grilling out. Smoking food. And, perhaps more specifically, using new food toys and unexpected ingredients.

I used my Smoking Gun (pictured below) to cold smoke Cheetos. Yes, you read that right. I cold smoked Cheetos. And that was a total Dad thing to do.

The Smoking Gun

It was really pretty simple. I packed some applewood chips into the smoker, put some Cheetos in a sandwich baggie, put the hose into the bag and let it all rip. Once the bag was full of smoke, I pulled the hose and sealed the bag. It only took a minute or two to introduce a nice smokey flavor to them. While that was doing its thing, I also cold smoked some burgers we had grilled a bit earlier in the day. It wasn’t as heavy a smoke as you might get from a full-on smoker but it is a really nice way to introduce a smokey flavor without adding the heat or having to mess with a bunch of equipment.

And the smoked Cheetos? They were really good. So was the burger. The finished meal? A smokey burger with blue cheese on a pretzel bun. Grilled veggies from the farmer’s market. Smokey Cheetos. Dad would have enjoyed it.
