After some encouragement from a Facebook friend, I joined Ysolda Teague’s Follow Your Arrow Mystery Knit-A-Long. If you’re not familiar with the term, a KAL is an organized group knitting the same pattern at the same time for fun and camaraderie. And then we have the mystery part. This means that we’ll have absolutely no idea what the pattern will look like before we start.
I’m a total maniac about color choice and how they work with specific patterns so giving up that little bit of control over how the finished product will look is something new for me.
From the official pattern page on Ravelry:
In need of some fun, selfish knitting after the holidays? Get ready for the first mystery knitalong from Ysolda, with a choose your own adventure style twist. There are five clues, and every clue will come with two options either of which builds perfectly from whichever you choose previously. The result is 32 possible combinations – a really mysterious adventure. In addition, it has been designed to work equally well in a solid colour or in stripes of two colours and instructions for both options are included.
I considered going with a single color but decided instead to use a combination with a little more pop. My final choice is Madelinetosh’s Tosh Merino Light in charcoal and grasshopper. This is one of my current favorite color pairings. So much so, in fact, that I decorated my office with these colors.
The KAL will be done over a period of 5 weeks. Doing the math, that means I’ll need to pace myself to knit approximately 136 yards a week or 19.4 yards a day. That seems do-able with a little discipline. We start on January 13th. Wish me luck!
