I told my mom that I’d cook dinner for her tonight. Umm… yeah, that didn’t happen.
What did happen was a trip out to the Burger Stand, a place in the College Hill neighborhood of Topeka. (1601 SW Lane Street, Topeka, KS 66604. 785 783-8900. There is also a location in Lawrence on Mass St.)
This was my first trip to the Burger Stand. I’ve been wanting to pop in for a while but it just hadn’t happened yet. They make excellent burgers and dogs with more-upscale-than-your-average-burger-joint ingredients. I ordered the black & blue burger (blue cheese, granny smith apple chutney & local greens) with a side of poutine. It was all exceptionally good. My burger was cooked to a perfect medium-rare, as requested. The fries were perfectly crisp and the cheese curds and gravy made an indulgent topping. I did snag a few dry fries from the bottom to try some of the available dipping sauces. We tried chipotle cocoa ketchup, garlic parmesan aioli, roasted marshmallow and jalapeño ranch. All good though I personally thought the jalapeño ranch was the best of the lot. (The roasted marshmallow was good with the sweet potato fries!)
Servings are very generous. We were both hungry when we arrived and quite full when we left with half our dinners in takeout boxes. I keep thinking that this would be a fun place to take out of town friends. I’d probably suggest everyone get their own burger and then just split a few orders of fries. It would cut back on the leftovers and still give everyone a chance to try something different.
Neither of us ordered alcoholic drinks though it seems that they’ve got a good selection of mixed and well drinks, as well as various bottled & canned beers.
The restaurant wasn’t terribly busy when we arrived. The atmosphere was laid back and the wait staff friendly. It really is a college neighborhood place and I could see that a lot of the local college kids would have a blast hanging out on a Friday night. I’m going to try to avoid dating myself too badly though and just say that I was comfortably happy to be there on a slow night.
