I’ve been making more of an effort to check out local restaurants outside of my usual rotation. The Ladybird has been on my radar since I started hearing buzz about it on Facebook a few months ago. Recently opened, the seem to have developed quite the following already. On a recent trip to Lawrence with my mom last Saturday, we decided to hit them up for breakfast before the daily rush started. They’re so Lawrence and that is a definite compliment. They’re fun and eclectic… and that is reflected in their atmosphere and menu. Think comfort food with a twist.
I chose the Slinger, which was a plate of hash browns with a burger patty, scrambled eggs, chili and cheese. It was good but I don’t think I’d order it again. The chili was a bit beany for my tastes and I found it a little distracting. I also wish our waitress had given us a choice of toast, as other tables had gotten. We were served wheat toast but apparently they also have sourdough and rye. The hash browns were cooked perfectly. Just the right amount of crust on them. We also shared a side order of cheesy grits casserole, which I enjoyed.
Mom got the sweet potato black bean hash. She said it was good, though she had expected it to be more heavily seasoned. The menu also said that it came with ricotta and salsa, which weren’t on the plate. Perhaps the missing salsa was the extra jazz that Mom was missing.
Overall, we both agreed that our meals were good and we’d both would like to go back to try the lunch or dinner menu. Though the meals weren’t quite at 100%, they’re likely still working out the kinks of getting a new place going. The service was welcoming and friendly and the overall atmosphere was slightly eclectic but very comfortable.
Oh, and the pie. Their pie is supposed to be out of this world. Blueberry Basil? Strawberry Balsamic? Brown Sugar Peach? Whiskey Chocolate Cream? Yes, please!
